The John Cullen showroom, close to Berkshire
John Cullen Lighting is a leading British architectural lighting company, and a long-standing partner of ours. Our Experience Centre is home to the Homeplay X John Cullen showroom: a wide range of John Cullen fittings installed in real rooms, not on a display board.
That matters because light cannot be chosen from a catalogue. Here you can stand in a room and watch what a narrow beam does to a painting, how a concealed slot washes a curtain, and how a scene changes from morning to evening at the touch of a keypad.
Visits are by appointment. Designers are welcome to bring clients, samples and drawings.

How a lighting design happens
Good lighting is decided long before anyone installs a fitting. The question we are asked most is when to bring us in, and the honest answer is earlier than most people expect.
At concept stage, we work from the architect's drawings and the interior designer's scheme. This is when the important decisions are made: where light should come from, what each room is for at different times of day, and which surfaces and objects you want to reveal.
At technical design stage, we issue CAD lighting plans, fixture schedules, wiring schematics and electrical loadings, so the electrician and main contractor have everything they need before first fix.
At second fix, the fittings go in and the control system is commissioned.
At scene setting, we sit with you at dusk and tune the actual light: the levels, the fade times, the moments. This is the step that separates a lighting system from a lighting design.
A Berkshire project
A family home in Berkshire, November 2024. Working with Hill House Interiors and Sullivan & White over a two-year refurbishment, we delivered lighting design and lighting control throughout the house, with motorised blinds, and lighting and music by the pool.
In the bar, tucked under the eaves, a dartboard is lit by a framing projector so it appears to float. See the Berkshire project

Questions we are asked
Who does lighting design in Berkshire?
Homeplay designs architectural lighting and lighting control for homes across Berkshire from its Experience Centre in Sunbury-on-Thames, close to the county border. Founded in 2006, we are a Lutron dealer and a dealer for John Cullen Lighting, and our recent Berkshire work includes a whole-home project with Hill House Interiors.
Where can I see John Cullen lighting near Berkshire?
At the Homeplay Experience Centre, 117 Windmill Road, Sunbury-on-Thames, TW16 7EF. It is listed on John Cullen's own website as the Homeplay X John Cullen showroom. Visits are by appointment on +44 1932 781 327.
You are based in Surrey. Is Berkshire too far?
No. Sunbury-on-Thames is close to the Berkshire border, and we work regularly around Ascot.
When should a lighting designer be involved?
At concept stage, alongside the architect and interior designer, and in any case before first fix electrics. After plaster, options narrow and costs rise.
Do I have to replace my existing lighting to add control?
No, usually not. A lighting control system can normally work with the fittings you already have.
Will you work with my interior designer?
Yes, and we prefer it. Their design leads, and we make it work. We provide plans, schedules and loadings directly to the design and build team.
What does lighting design cost?
It depends on the size of the home and the ambition of the scheme. Our budget calculator gives a realistic figure for your home in five to eight minutes.
Do you only do lighting?
No. Lighting is our main focus, and we also design shading, music, television, cinema, Wi-Fi and security, so one team is responsible for all of it. Smart home automation in Berkshire
